Tips For New Antique HuntersChoosing an antique can be a risky proposition if you are new to this
arena. You need to make sure you know what you want to purchase, where
you are looking and what your budget is.
First, you need to decide what you want to look for. It is too easy to go out to various antique stores and start purchasing things willy nilly, and come home without any piece that you really love. So decide what this shopping trip will be for, whether it is an old print, a dresser or china. That way you can narrow down the next most important thing - your budget. You need to establish a budget for your antiques. If you do not have a firm maximum in mind, there is a risk that you will overpay for an item and be unhappy with your purchase. Try to make your purchase cash only. Most dealers accept cash only, and those that do accept credit cards may give you a better deal if you do pay cash. Having this limit will also help you choose the right piece. Now you have to choose where to shop for your antique. Ideally, if your area has plenty of antique shops to choose from, you can narrow down the shops to those that deal primarily in the items you are looking for. That will give you the most selection to choose from, and the best array of prices. Not to mention that the dealers will be able to answer specific questions about the particular piece you have in mind. You may also choose to shop at an antique road show. Check and see if the promoter of the show is a member of any antiques organizations. You should expect to pay an entrance fee to any road show that is high end. Choosing an antique vendor can also be risky. Ideally, you want someone who has been established for a while. That way you know they are familiar with pricing of antiques, and you will be able to ask them questions about the type of piece you are looking for. Also ask if they are members in any type of antique dealers organizations. That also will show you how seriously they take their business. It also will give you an avenue if you need to dispute your purchase on the grounds of authenticity. Once you decide on an item, make sure the invoice that is written up includes everything negotiated in the sale. This could include anything from the price, to any restoration work, to delivery of the piece. That way this protects you in case the dealer you are working with becomes ‘forgetful’, or if you need to dispute the authenticity. The most important thing when purchasing an antique is to make sure that you love the piece. Antiquing is not just about finding the deals. While future value is important, remember that you will be incorporating this piece into your home and lifestyle, so make sure it fits well!
